We are currently recruiting for a Data Protection Officer to join our Head Office's Group Secretariat team. We are looking for a highly-driven and focused professional to lead the design and delivery of our privacy and data protection programme. This is an excellent opportunity to join our fast expanding and highly successful Group. 

Using your experience in a similar role or in a privacy-related field, you will act as the first point of contact for internal stakeholders to advise and support them on a wide variety of matters pertaining to data protection. As subject matter expert, you will also be the main point of contact for engaging with supervisory authorities. You will work closely with the Compliance and Information Security functions towards ensuring that the Group adheres to and complies with the requirements of applicable data protection laws and regulations, with a key focus on the UK Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA) and the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Delivering Excellence by:

  • Leading on GDPR implementation and providing support on implementation across the Group, including liaising with the Group’s corporate functions such as Legal, Systems and Transformation, IT, Finance, HR and Security.
  • Monitoring and ensuring compliance with all applicable data protection laws, regulations and codes of conduct (as they develop from time to time) and provide practical guidance to the Group’s operations.
  • Supporting preparation of relevant responses to inquiries from the UK Information Commissioner’s Office or any other legal or regulatory body.
  • Assisting in responding to and managing requests from individuals exercising their rights under the DPA and/or GDPR.
  • Monitoring and ensuring completion of all data protection related actions resulting from internal and/or external audits.

Regulatory accountabilities will include:

  • Inform and advise the Group and its employees of their obligations pursuant to the DPA, GDPR and other EU Member States’ data protection provisions.
  • Monitor compliance with the DPA, GDPR, with other EU Member States’ data protection provisions and with Group policies relating to data protection, including the assignment of responsibilities, awareness-raising and training of employees involved in processing personal data, and the related audits.
  • Monitor the Group’s performance around data protection impact assessments.
  • Provide advice and guidance on the management and reporting of breaches involving personal data.
  • Act as the point of contact for the lead supervisory authority on issues relating to data processing, including the prior consultation referred to in Article 36 of the GPDR.
  • Have due regard to the risks associated with data processing operations, taking into account the nature, scope, context and purposes of processing.

To reach Excellence, you must have the following skills and experience:

  • Be a qualified solicitor with demonstrable experience in data protection or an individual who has experience in/exposure to regulatory and policy advice in respect of data protection matters, including standalone advice such as data security, compliance, policies and subject access requests.
  • A well-developed understanding of data protection legal and regulatory requirements as well as a good understanding of the practical application of data protection legislation.
  • Familiarity in translating complex legislation or legal advice into specific and clear business-focused guidance.
  • Experience with/exposure to compliance and governance matters is desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact well with both internal and external stakeholders.
